Deep Reef

(Redirected from Aqua Grabber)

Deep Reef (also known as Aqua Grabber) is an original composition done by Chris Hendricks for the Aqua Grabber minigame, used in the Clam Waters level[1][2]. It was made with the Yamaha PSRE403 keyboard samples[3]. Although its final version was made in 2008, the idea dates back to 1999, making it Chris' oldest work to have been in some way or another used in Club Penguin.

Composing History[edit]

The song's history dates back to when Chris was 17 years old, on October 24th, 1999. At that time, he had improvised a tune with his Korg M1 synthesizer, which would turn out to be the prototype of the Aqua Grabber theme. The song he improvised contained a lead melody that Chris would later look back to, although other elements such as the solo melody was discarded. The recording of this original performance is available on Chris' second video of his Club Penguin Music series, although he comments on how the recording is like "showing a photo of you when you are a baby".

Once he got presented with Aqua Grabber, he looked back to that melody, using a flute and transposing it to a higher key. He backed the melody with pizzicato strings and the bubbling sound, which is a sample called "Submarine" on his keyboard.

Trivia[edit]

  • Ironically, Chris wrote the first sketch on October 24th, the date that would later turn out to become Club Penguin's anniversary date.
  • Chris mentions that the song is likely inspired by the Finding Nemo soundtrack, for songs such as "Scum Angel". He also comments that "Thomas Newman is a musical genius".
